Avoiding The Hurt
Stevie slept in the next morning, and Jessica took advantage of this rare opportunity to escape without her son. Rather than drive, she walked. She was uncertain of her final destination and allowed her mind to dictate her steps. Before Jessica left home, she dolled up—wanting to feel extra sexy and ripe. She needed this because her mind constantly replayed what Stevie had called her—Jillie. Jessica could not understand how Stevie could think about Jillian, especially when he was with her. The mere thought caused her insides to flutter. Sweat began to dwell excessively on her forehead and under her armpits as tears filled her eyes. Her shoulders heaved, and she buried her face into the palms of her hands. She felt totally out of sync with the world and her surroundings. Anyone could have approached her, but Jessica did not care about what went on around her; in fact, her mind raced with everything, but also nothing at all.
Jessica’s phone buzzed and jolted her back to life. It was Stevie. She did not want to see him, nor did she want to speak with him. Eventually it stopped, then started up again, and again. She answered after the fourth assault.
“What do you want?”
“Where are you, Jessie?”
“Out.”
“Where are you?”
“Stevie, you called me by her name.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You treated me like shit.”
“I don’t have time for this. I need to go on the road. You need to come home to your child.”
“Not going to happen—not now.” Jessica ended the call and immediately felt better. Perhaps it was her enduring need to take back her strength after being mentally, physically and emotionally abused. Whatever the cause, the impact was bound to be more significant. I am Jessica Rodney. I’m not weak. I’m not Sadie. I’m not a victim. She felt even better after this declaration. As she finally looked up and took heed of her location—Sam’s house.
As Jessica approached the front door, reached out and knocked, she was confident. Her shoulders pushed back and her chest extended forward. She gathered the entire length of her wavy hair and positioned it in front of her right shoulder. As she raised a fist to knock, Sam pulled open the door and stood in the doorway. Jessica yelped. “You scared me, girl.”
“Why are you here, Jessie?” Sam faced her head on and filled the path, so much so that Jessica could not see further into the home.
“I needed to get out of the house. Can I come in?”
“It’s Sunday.”
“So?”
“We’re talking.”
“So?”
“How about I come check you later, Jessie?”
“I need you now, Sam.” Jessica attempted to step forward, but her friend would not abide. She pulled back just the upper parts of her body and leaned her head sideways. “What’s going on?”
“Just need some time, that’s all.”
“You don’t want me here because Cole’s here?” Jessica smirked as she realized that her friend was threatened by her mere existence.
“Jessica, leave it alone. Now is not a good time.”
“I thought we were friends,” she taunted and flashed a devious pout.
